24 Feb Ask an Au Pair: Amanda appreciates the slow pace and the warmth of Parisians
This week, we asked Amanda, a 25-year old from Washington DC. She is living with her host family in Levallois, on the edge of Paris. Here are excerpts from her responses:
What inspires you about Paris?
The way a big city can still operate at a slower pace, where people stop to appreciate the little things. Sitting at a café for three hours with an espresso where no one is hurrying you along, even though you finished your coffee an hour ago.
What do you dislike most about living in Paris?
The lack of sunny weather in winter. Missing those September picnics.
What is the best way to meet Parisians?
Don’t be afraid to go places alone. If you make an effort with French and aren’t hiding in your comfort zone, Paris is a much warmer city than you’d expect.
How do you improve or master your French language skills?
Insist that your host parents speak only in French with you. It will feel exhausting and even disastrous at times, but when you have no other way of communicating, you’ll be forced to learn.
What is the best meal you’ve had in Paris?
Any of the prix fixe lunches on Mouffetard – three course meals for less than 14 euros! Also, Chez Gladines (Basque food) in the 13th. Go with a group and split everything.
What is your favorite neighborhood?
The 5th/Sorbonne area; the upper 4th and 10th arrondissements.
What is your favorite café?
Café Universel (in the 5th); Wide Open Spaces (5th); Les Piétons (4th)
What is your favorite museum?
Garden at the Rodin Museum
What is your favorite secret Paris spot?
The animal menagerie in the Jardin des Plantes, on the border of the 5th and 13th. Also, the Statue of Liberty on an island near the Eiffel Tower…
What advice would you give to incoming au pairs?
Listen, observe, and meet people at every chance you get. Don’t re-create your American comfort zone in Paris. Let yourself be vulnerable, and seek after the experiences that terrify you.
