09 Feb Ask an Au Pair: Victoria loves ALL the cafés in Paris
This week, we asked Victoria, a 22-year old from Australia. She is living in a studio near her host family in the 15th arrondissement. Here are excerpts from her responses:
What inspires you about Paris?
The architecture and culture
What do you dislike most about living in Paris?
Even though there are a lot of people, it can be quite isolating. But I don’t think it’s because of Paris; I think it just comes with being a foreigner and trying to adapt to a new way of living.
What is the best way to meet Parisians?
Frequent the cafes and shops in your area, they start to recognize you and gradually you become friends. Also take classes. I have taken some dance classes and this was a great way to meet new Parisians.
How do you improve or master your French language skills?
Practice. Practice. Practice. Don’t be shy, if you get something wrong, who cares! Also read whenever you can and watch French films with subtitles IN FRENCH.
What is the best meal you’ve had in Paris?
Duck confit with mashed potatoes.
What is your favorite neighborhood?
The 8th, 6th, 4th and 7th arrondissements
What is your favorite café?
Love them all
What is your favorite shop?
I don’t know the name but there is a little shoe shop on Rue de Lourmel which is great!
What is your favorite museum?
Grand Palais….but I haven’t been to all of the museums yet!
What advice would you give to incoming au pairs?
Don’t have any expectations. Save money before you come. When you get here, try not to constantly speak with your family and friends back home – it makes you homesick.
Above all give yourself time to adapt. Don’t feel stressed that you don’t immediately feel at home. The way of life is extremely different and it takes time to break barriers with people and culture. Also be honest with you host family and talk about your life. It helps build relationships and you feel less overwhelmed.
