18 Apr The Au Pair Experience Helps Emily Become More Successful in College
Written by Emily, age 21
Working as an au pair in Paris was an amazing experience for me. I was independent, and I took on a more adult role. I lived alone in another country, bought my own groceries, worked 30 hours a week and attended school to improve my French. I sacrificed material things for experiences, and I budgeted and saved money to travel. However, for me the biggest accomplishment was being able to see the world in a wider, more meaningful way. I can see beyond college and have looked into graduate schools and other opportunities that I never would have thought of last year. Because of this experience I have been more productive and successful in college.
Without the help of Sylvie and Susan at Au Pair Paris my experience would not have been as excellent as it was. They were there every step of the way helping me figure out what school I wanted to attend, helping me understand how to get my visa and giving me advice if I had questions about work. The most important thing of all however, was that they paired me with the nicest family I have ever met. They were so welcoming and inclusive and by the end of my stay felt like a part of the family. I became very attached to my charge, a little eight-year-old girl, and still stay in contact with her via Skype and email.
My gap year in Paris as an au pair allowed me to grow, to mature and to follow passions that otherwise would never have been awakened. The choices we make in life lead us down different paths. I think it is important to find our passions before, instead of at the end of our education. Real life experience is something no one can give you in school. It is a moment that has to be seized and taken advantage of. My gap year is something I will remember for the rest of my life and has changed me forever. I would recommend this experience to everyone.
